Reviving historical practices, with contemporary environmental thinking and current scientific advances, trimmings are dyed by BioDye in India, with a closed loop system. BioDye uses dyes and mordants that are environmentally safe. Dyestuffs are obtained from sustainable sources such as leaves, fruits, and regenerative stems. Waste materials are biodegradable, with compost and irrigation water used to grow dye, medicinal plants and food crops for in-house consumption. Through a collaboration with village women's groups, dyeplants and firewood are collected from renewable plantations and used in fuel-efficient stoves in the dye house. BioDye also work with local farmers to support the re-introduction of indigo in agriculturally depleted regions, thereby contributing to sustainable livelihoods.

Plain Weave-6.2oz-Hempcel®

Hemp fabric rapidly absorbs moisture, which accounts for its coolness and comfort when used for apparel. It is also one of the only fabrics which are stronger wet than dry, so it does not become tender through washing.

Made In: China

Width: 57-58 inches

Weight: 6.2 oz.

Content: 55% Hemp, 45% Lyocell

Washing/Cleaning

Each time hemp is washed it constantly reveals new surfaces, usually becoming softer with use. Given reasonable care it will render a lifetime of service.

Generally speaking, dry cleaning is recommended for drapery hemp, upholstery hemp, decorative hemp, and high end garments.
If you are washing plain hemp fabric that has not yet been made into a garment, then it is very important to surge the edges before wash to prevent fraying.

As with other textiles, always test for color fastness and remember that detergents containing Optical Brightening Agents (OBA) may cause colors to alter slightly and will detract from the appearance of the subtle natural hemp. Bleach should not be used as it can significantly degrade and weaken the natural fibers.

Hemp sheds dirt more readily than other materials and with thorough rinsing comes clean as new after every wash. If stained, use a proprietary stain-remover before washing.

There is no need to use starch except perhaps for the finest hemps, for hemp has a natural crispness. hemp does not have to be tumble-dried - it will naturally dry quickly.

Softening:
Hemp generally will get softer with use and after each wash. If you need to speed up this process then a commercial softener may be used. Another way to soften hemp is to do a hot water wash followed by a tumble dry, repeat these two steps two or three times.

Organic Cotton Veggie Dyed Thread-200 meter spool, Tex 40

This unique thread is our TEX 40 natural thread that has been dyed with natural vegetable dyes by master dyer Kat Quigley.

Tex 40 is a multi-purpose thread that is strong and smooth. Sturdier than our other multi-purpose threads we recommend Tex 40 for sportswear, home decor, dolls and other products that will take some wear and tear. It can also be used for embroidery.  If a coating is required for hand sewing, use beeswax.

Care Instructions:

You can care for thread that has been vegetable dyed like you would any other textile. We always recommend pH neutral detergent and storing your items in the dark when not in use, as some dyes (natural or synthetic) can fade if left in direct sunlight.

Vegetable dyes do give the thread a little different texture because a very slight amount of vegetable matter is still on and between the cotton fibers. You may notice a bit of dust accumulating on your needle where the thread goes through the eye. This is normal. We have also noticed that the dye process adds a bit of strength to the thread. And, different colors have different effects.

The darker colors where indigo and iron are used tend to do what is known as crocking. That means that if you were to rub the spool of thread against a piece of white fabric you might notice a bit of the color on the fabric. When sewing with a single strand you don’t notice the crocking, and the color doesn’t bleed into the fabric, but it might leave a slight dust on the sewing machine if a lot of sewing is done.
